Why Does Exercise Help Sleep?
We've all heard or experienced the night following a hard workout it seems to be very easy to fall asleep.
Why does this seem to be the case?
It's all about your body temperature. Your body temperature is normally higher during the day than it is at night. Healthy sleepers notice this temperature change and at night when the body temperature goes down they feel tired and want to get some rest.
People who are having trouble with sleep have trouble with a body temperature that doesn't change much regardless of the day or night. People in this category find that moving the body vigorously results in a higher body temperature and the whole body gets pumped up and may feel more alert alive and energetic.
This also results in a good night's sleep, not only to have the body recuperate from the exercise but also a change in the body temperature cycle. Since the exercise made it go up, it must go down at night and thus the body senses it is sleep time.
To make it simple, if you want to sleep you need to make yourself tired. Exercise can be the ticket to slumber land. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.
